New Horizons

The theory of  Hermeneutics has its application in various academic fields including theology, philosophy and psychology. It is the skill and art of interpretation of human actions or products. Hermeneutics is understanding and search for meaning of the human actions, utterances, products and institutions.Human actions and behaviour are sometimes difficult to understand whether they are external events or internal experiences. Human utterances, thoughts, speech and linguistic products have to be explained and interpreted. Human products – artistic, literary, or audiovisual (such as music, opera, theatre, cinema and video)- are products, which have a meaning to be investigated. The products of human sciences, knowledge and technology sometimes need to be understood and their meaning examined, studied, compared and criticised. Our cultural and social institutions, social structures and organisations have a significance and impact on our life.

Our interpretation of our world is not free from difficulties and limitations. We are governed by our situations and history when we try to interpret our reality. Our limitations and situatedness are our horizons. Our horizons have a powerful impact on our understanding of reality. They modify our understanding. We have both personal and cultural horizons. Our personal horizon is made of our personal history and experiences. Our cultural horizon is formed of the cultural structures and institutions of our society. This also includes the language we speak, its history and its limitations.

Without awareness of these horizons and their influence on our understanding and interpretation of our reality, we will miss the true meaning of our experiences. We may be more successful in gaining such meaningful interpretation if we merge our personal and cultural horizons and become aware of their historical dimensions.

This website is an attempt to understand and examine both my personal and cultural horizons, which form my worldview. I am trying to build New Horizons, new personal and cultural experiences which may enhance and enrich my understanding of reality and my search of meaning, extending my historical personal and cultural horizons from the past, to the present and into the future.

The Psychiatric Zone was established more than 10 years ago – on another server – as an extensive resource on various psychiatric topics which may be of interest to the public or the professionals. It is aimed for students for higher qualifications in Psychiatry, Psychology, Social Sciences, Mental Health Nursing and Neurosciences. However, it also proved to be of interest to the public seeking informationn about psychiatric disorders and mental illness. Some subjects draw more public interest such as family therapy, psychodynamics, social psychiatry, morbid jealousy, anorexia nervosa and psychosurgery. I moved it here and it was updated, rewritten and revised.
